How many ACM sheets do I need for a sign tray?

Start with the complete flat blank and the checked sheet layout. The finished face size alone does not tell you how much material to order.

ACM is aluminium composite material. To plan an order, check the sheets needed for the face, any backing tray and the acrylic behind fret-cut artwork. Keep different materials, finishes, thicknesses and stock sizes separate.

The face and the flat blank are different sizes.

The face is the part seen from the front. The flat blank also includes the material that forms the returns. Corners, joints and separate pieces affect what must fit on the sheet, so use the checked flat pattern for the actual job.

The fictional Willow & Wren Café sign below has an 1800 × 600 mm face and 60 mm returns. Tray Master shows a 1920 × 720 mm flat face blank for this design. Use your own job’s displayed blank dimensions when planning another sign.

Keep each stock requirement clear.

Check the face plan first. If the job needs a backing tray, check its panels and joining pieces separately. Acrylic backers have their own sheet plan too. A count of face sheets is not a complete material order.

Record the material, finish, thickness, stock dimensions and quantity for each group. Two sheets of different materials cannot be ordered as “two ACM sheets”. Check usable stock already in the workshop, and confirm the sizes you can actually obtain from your supplier.

This example needs two sheets of different stock.

The recorded job is one unlit sign, with no backing tray and no allowance for spares. Its stock list shows one ACM face sheet and one acrylic sheet. The face-sheet count is one; the combined material order is two sheets.

The actual stock details from the fictional-job recording show two sheets to order: one ACM face sheet and one acrylic sheet. These counts apply to this example.

A part count is not a sign count. Review the pieces on every sheet and check the job quantity. Another design, quantity, material choice or stock size needs its own layout check.

Review the layout before counting the order.

Check every sheet, including small joining pieces and any separate backing or acrylic parts. Review joints, panel sizes and the way the sign will be assembled and transported.

If the material has a grain or directional finish, confirm the required direction before rotating parts. Check part spacing and sheet-edge clearance against your cutting process. Review machining details and toolpaths in CAM before manufacture.

Use the layout for the chosen stock rather than a calculation based only on face area. Check the current dimensions and material selections after any change, then record the quantities from that reviewed plan.

Help with face, backing and sheet layouts

Confirm what the supplier will supply.

Make clear whether you are buying full sheets, cut blanks or folded trays. Check which pieces are included, who will cut and fold them, and whether any spare material is required. Confirm stock size, thickness and finish with the supplier before ordering.

Keep the checked drawing and material list with the job. If the design changes, review the layout and order again.
